Cavendish Bridge (Mauritius)

Weather…

Spanning the Rivière La Chaux in the historic town of Mahébourg, the Cavendish Bridge is an architectural landmark and the longest bridge in Mauritius. It was officially opened in 1911 during the British colonial era, replacing a former wooden bridge that had fallen into disrepair. The bridge was named after Victor Cavendish, the 9th Duke of Devonshire, who served as a high-ranking British official. Constructed using reinforced concrete, a pioneering building technique for the island at the time, it stands as a testament to early 20th-century engineering. The bridge remains a critical link between the heart of Mahébourg and the suburb of Ville Noire. Beyond its functional role, it features pedestrians scenic views of the river's calm waters and the verdant mangroves that define this pretty coastal region, making it a popular spot for both locals and history-minded tourists.
