Ramla Bay (Gozo) (Malta)

Weather…

Ramla Bay, known in Maltese as Ir-Ramla l-Ħamra (the Red Sands), is the largest and most renowned sandy beach on the island of Gozo. The bay is world-famous for its unique, lively orange-red sand, a color derived from the high iron oxide content in the surrounding limestone. Located at the foot of a fertile valley between the villages of Xagħra and Nadur, the beach remains largely undeveloped, maintaining its natural and rugged character. In the center of the bay stands a distinctive white statue of the Virgin Mary, erected in 1881 to commemorate protection against shipwrecks. Historically, Ramla Bay is of significant archaeological interest, as the remains of an ancient Roman villa lie buried beneath the sand, preserved after being excavated in the 18th century. Additionally, remnants of 18th-century defensive walls and batteries built by the Knights of St. John can still be seen at the water's edge. The shallow and clear waters make it a good spot for families, while the surrounding sand dunes are protected areas for native flora and fauna. The bay is also famously linked to Homer's Odyssey, with the legendary Calypso’s Cave overlooking the sands from the adjacent cliffs.
