Kota Kinabalu, the spirited capital of Sabah, is located on the northwest coast of Borneo overlooking the South China Sea. Established in the late 19th century by the British North Borneo Company, it was originally named Jesselton after Sir Charles Jessel. The city suffered near-total destruction during World War II due to heavy aerial bombing, necessitating a complete reconstruction following the conflict's end in 1945. In 1967, it was renamed Kota Kinabalu, honoring nearby Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in Malaysia. Today, the city serves as East Malaysia's primary industrial and commercial hub and the main international gateway to the state of Sabah. Its modern skyline is defined by landmarks such as the floating City Mosque and the distinctive circular Sabah State Department building. The city's immediate proximity to the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park and vast tropical rainforests makes it a significant regional center for ecotourism and marine research.
