Arriving early in the morning coincides with the bears' primary feeding times, maximizing your chances of seeing them actively foraging and climbing. During the heat of the midday sun, many sun bears retreat to shaded areas or take long naps, becoming less visible.
Etiquette
Visitors are required to stay strictly on the elevated wooden boardwalks and observation platforms provided to ensure both human safety and animal comfort. Shouting or attempting to attract the bears' attention is strictly forbidden, as this center focuses heavily on natural rehabilitation.
What to bring
Bringing a camera with a decent zoom is beneficial, as the bears can sometimes be quite high up in the dense canopy of the forest enclosure. A lightweight rain jacket or umbrella is always a smart precaution, given Borneo's unpredictable tropical climate and frequent afternoon showers.
Getting there
The center is very conveniently located adjacent to the famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, making it incredibly easy to combine both visits. It is easily reachable by taxi or public bus directly from the nearby coastal city of Sandakan via well-maintained roads.
What to expect
