What is this place?
The Kanengo Industrial Area is the industrial heart of Lilongwe and a global hub for tobacco processing and auction trading. Numerous processing plants, warehouses, and auction houses handle Malawi's most important export commodity here.
Visiting
The industrial area is an active business district, mostly not open to visitors. From the main roads one can see the factories and warehouses, but entering company premises requires permission.
Where to view it
The best view of the entire industrial area is from the M1 highway which passes through Kanengo. An elevated point on the Lilongwe river side provides a good overview of smoking chimneys and vast facilities.
Local products
The main product is processed tobacco prepared in bales for export. In surrounding shops of Lilongwe one can also buy local textiles, wood carvings, and other agricultural products such as tea and coffee.
Active season
Peak activity occurs during tobacco auction season from March to September, when auction houses and processing plants run around the clock. In other months demand is lower, but warehousing continues.

A convenient combination is visiting central Lilongwe with the Parliament building and Lilongwe Wildlife Centre. Bingu National Park and surrounding traditional villages also make excellent day trips.
