Red Castle (Assaraya al-Hamra) (Libya)

Weather…

The Red Castle, known locally as Assaraya al-Hamra, is a massive fortress that has dominated the skyline of the Libyan capital, Tripoli, for centuries. Situated on the edge of the Old City, the citadel's history dates back to the Roman period, when it originated as a fortified castrum. Over the eras, the fortress was continuously expanded and remodeled by Arab rulers, the Knights of St. John, the Ottomans, and finally the Italians. It derives its name from the distinctive reddish tint of its outer walls, a feature that becomes particularly prominent during sunset. The interior of the fortress is a labyrinth of courtyards, gardens, ornate fountains, and grand chambers that once served as the official residence for the Pashas of Tripoli. Today, the Red Castle houses the National Museum of Libya, which is home to one of the most significant collections of ancient artifacts in North Africa. Its strategic position overlooking the Mediterranean made the fortress the epicenter of Libyan political and military power for generations.
