Knights of Malta Castle (Libya)

Weather…

The Red Castle of Tripoli, also known as Assaraya al-Hamra, housed the Knights of the Order of St. John during a brief but significant phase in the 16th century. After the Knights were expelled from Rhodes in 1522, Emperor Charles V granted them control of Tripoli along with the islands of Malta and Gozo in 1530. During their occupation, the Knights massively reinforced the fortifications to secure them against the looming Ottoman expansion. The castle is located on the northeastern edge of the Medina and overlooks the harbor, making it an indispensable defensive facility. Despite their efforts, the Knights could not hold the city permanently and had to cede it to the Ottoman Admiral Turgut Reis in 1551 after a siege. Today, the expansive castle houses the Libyan National Museum and displays artifacts from across the country's history, from antiquity to the present. The architecture of the castle is a palimpsest of different eras, combining Spanish, Maltese, and Ottoman building styles into a monumental whole.

📋 Practical info

🚪
Visiting
The exterior remnants of these historical fortifications can usually be viewed freely as part of the Medina's architectural landscape, while interior access is highly restricted. Exploring the surrounding old city walls has the best perspective of the original defensive layout.
🕒
Typical hours
As an open-air historical remnant integrated into the old city, the exterior is typically visible at all times during daylight hours. Guided historical tours usually operate in the mornings when the Medina is less crowded.
📷
Photography
Photography of the historical stonework is generally permitted, but strictly avoid capturing nearby military or government installations. Early morning light highlights the textures of the remaining defensive structures beautifully.
⏱️
Time needed
A brief stop of about 20 to 30 minutes is usually sufficient to admire the surviving architecture. History enthusiasts might spend a bit longer tracing the footprint of the Hospitaller defenses.
Combine with
Combine this historical stop with a broader walking tour of the Tripoli Medina and the nearby Arch of Marcus Aurelius. The traditional souks and local coffee shops in the old town are also first-rate for an extended visit.
🧭
Getting there
Located within the old town of Tripoli, the site is best reached on foot while navigating the narrow, historic alleyways. Taxis can drop you off at the main entrances to the Medina, from where it is a short walk.
💡
Insider tip
Hiring a knowledgeable local guide is highly recommended, as the ruins lack comprehensive signage and their rich history is best explained by an expert. Dress modestly and comfortably for walking through the dusty streets.
