Ouagadougou Conference Center (Libya)

Weather…

The Ouagadougou Conference Center is a massive architectural complex located in the city of Sirte, Libya. Constructed during the reign of Muammar Gaddafi, it was named after the capital of Burkina Faso to symbolize his commitment to pan-African unity. The center gained global significance as the venue for numerous international summits, most notably the 1999 meeting where the Sirte Declaration was signed, leading to the creation of the African Union. The building's design is monumental, featuring a vast central dome, extensive marble halls, and state-of-the-art facilities for high-level diplomacy. Sirte was envisioned by the former regime as a future capital for a United States of Africa, which explains the scale and opulence of this facility. Throughout the Libyan conflicts of 2011 and the subsequent battle against ISIS in 2016, the conference center suffered major damage as it was used as a strategic military stronghold. Despite these challenges, it has been partially restored and continues to serve as a venue for significant national political gatherings and reconciliation talks.
