The old town consists of closely packed mud-brick houses whose ground floors are connected by a network of covered walkways that provide shade from the scorching sun. The rooftops form a separate level traditionally reserved for women, allowing them to move freely between houses. Historically, Ghadames was an important Roman settlement known as Cydamus and later developed into a significant center for trans-Saharan caravan trade. For centuries, the water supply has been managed by a sophisticated system of canals directing water from a central artesian spring to the city's gardens. Today, the old town is largely a museum, with residents having moved to modern districts, yet cultural identity and artisanal traditions are still maintained. Ghadames remains an outstanding example of human adaptability and architectural genius amidst the inhospitable desert.
