Lima Site 85, located atop the 1,789-meter Phou Pha Thi mountain in Houaphanh Province, was one of the most secret and strategically vital military installations during the Second Indochina War. From 1966 to 1968, the U.S. Air Force operated a sophisticated TACAN (Tactical Air Navigation) site here to guide bombing missions over North Vietnam during night and poor weather. The site was considered inaccessible due to the sheer cliffs surrounding the peak, which is sacred to the local Hmong and Yao people. However, in March 1968, North Vietnamese commandos successfully scaled the cliffs and captured the base in a significant surprise attack. This battle resulted in the highest loss of U.S. Air Force ground personnel in a single action during the entire war. Today, the location is a somber historical site, though access is limited due to unexploded ordnance and its remote geography. It remains a powerful symbol of the Secret War in Laos and the extreme conditions under which military operations were conducted.
