Shanga Ruins (Kenya)

Weather…

The Shanga Ruins are located on the southern coast of Pate Island and represent one of the earliest known Swahili settlements in the Lamu Archipelago, dating back to the late 8th century. Extensive archaeological excavations led by Mark Horton in the 1980s revealed a continuous sequence of occupation that provides evidence for the transition from timber and mud structures to permanent coral stone architecture. One of the most significant findings at Shanga was a sequence of early mosques built on top of each other, demonstrating the early arrival and integration of Islam in East African coastal societies. The settlement reached its peak between the 11th and 13th centuries, serving as a hub for local and transoceanic trade, evidenced by the discovery of coins and glass shards from various parts of the Indian Ocean. Shanga was abandoned in the early 15th century for reasons that are still debated, though environmental changes and shifting trade routes are likely factors. The site is essential for understanding the indigenous roots and external influences that shaped the Swahili culture during its formative years.
