The Sisem-Ata necropolis, located on the Mangystau plateau, is one of the most significant and ancient burial sites in western Kazakhstan. Often referred to as the 'Pantheon of the Batyrs' (heroes), it is the resting place of many legendary warriors and tribal leaders throughout Kazakh history. The complex comprises over 1,300 monuments dating from the 13th to the 19th centuries. The necropolis is distinguished by an enormous variety of burial forms, including intricate mausoleums, carved stone pillars (kulpytas), and various stone sculptures. The stonemasonry is particularly impressive, featuring complex geometric patterns and inscriptions etched into the light-colored local limestone. The site serves as an essential record of the funeral rites and spiritual culture of the region's nomadic peoples. Today, Sisem-Ata is regarded as a sacred site, drawing numerous pilgrims who come to pay their respects to the ancestors.

The site is about 10 km northwest of Shetpe in the desert. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended, as the last kilometers are on an unpaved track.

Visit the necropolis in the late afternoon when the light makes the stones glow golden. Bring plenty of water, as there are no supply points in the area.
