The Karkaraly Mountains, often called the 'Switzerland of Kazakhstan', are a photogenic mountain oasis in the middle of the endless Kazakh steppe. Located in the Karaganda Region, they are part of the Karkaraly National Park. The mountains are relatively low, with the highest point at 1,403 meters, but their pine-covered granite slopes, interspersed with numerous freshwater lakes, create a sharp contrast with the surrounding flat landscape. The rocks have been carved by erosion into strange and wonderful shapes, sparking the imagination of visitors. The most famous lake is Shaytankol ('Devil's Lake'), which is shrouded in many legends. The region is a popular destination for Kazakh tourists who come for hiking, camping, and enjoying the unique nature.
