Anyrakay Battlefield (Kazakhstan)

Weather…

The 1729 Battle of Anyrakay was a pivotal event in Kazakh history, where the united forces of the three Kazakh Jüzder (Hordes) inflicted a decisive defeat on the Dzungar invaders. This victory is credited with ending the 'Great Calamity' (Aktaban-Shubyryndy), a period of devastating Dzungar raids that began in 1723. While the battle fostered a sense of national unity, it also led Abulkhair Khan to seek an alliance with the Russian Empire in 1731, which marked the beginning of two centuries of Russian and Soviet influence. The event's significance was downplayed during the Soviet era. After Kazakhstan's independence in 1991, the site was reclaimed as a place of national pride, now marked by a large monument honoring the warriors who unified the nation.
