Kostanay, the administrative center of the Kostanay Region in northern Kazakhstan, is situated on the banks of the Tobol River. Founded in 1879, the city was initially named Nikolaevsk before being renamed Kustanai in 1895. The region is historically renowned as one of Central Asia's primary grain-producing hubs, a status reinforced by the Virgin Lands Campaign in the 1950s. Today, Kostanay plays a pivotal role in the Kazakh food processing industry and mechanical engineering, particularly in automotive assembly. The city's architecture features a mix of late-Tsarist era buildings and modern developments. Due to its proximity to the Russian border, Kostanay serves as a significant trade and logistics hub. The city has a well-developed educational network and several prominent agricultural research institutes.
