Kitakyushu Industrial Zone

The Kitakyushu Industrial Zone on the island of Kyushu is the cradle of modern Japanese heavy industry. Its rise began in 1901 with the founding of the state-run Yahata Steel Works, which laid the foundation for Japan's industrial expansion. The zone benefited from its proximity to the Chikuho coalfields and access to the shipping lanes of the Kanmon Strait. For decades, the region was characterized by intensive steel production and chemical industries, which, however, led to significant environmental issues. In a remarkable turnaround starting in the 1970s, Kitakyushu transformed from a smog-choked city into a globally recognized model for environmental protection and green technology. Today, the zone houses the Kitakyushu Eco-Town complex, where circular economy and recycling are practiced on a large scale. In addition to traditional iron and steel industries, automotive manufacturers like Nissan and Toyota have established major plants here. The zone remains a vital component of the Japanese economy and successfully demonstrates the transition from heavy industry to sustainable manufacturing.
