Shinano River (Japan)

Weather…

The Shinano River is the longest river in Japan, with a total length of 367 kilometers. It originates from Mount Kobushi in the Japanese Alps and flows through Nagano and Niigata Prefectures before emptying into the Sea of Japan at Niigata City. Within Nagano Prefecture, the river is traditionally known as the Chikuma River, taking the name Shinano only after crossing the border into Niigata. Its drainage basin covers approximately 11,900 square kilometers and is vital for agriculture, particularly rice production in the fertile Echigo Plain. Historically, the river was an important commercial artery, though it was also notorious for frequent and destructive flooding. To mitigate this, the Shinano River diversion channel (Okozu Canal) was completed in 1922, ranking as one of the largest civil engineering projects in Japan. Numerous hydroelectric power plants are situated along its course, providing a steady supply of energy to the surrounding regions.
