The eastern Fresco Lagoon is located on the coast of Côte d'Ivoire between Grand-Lahou and Sassandra. This RAMSAR-protected site is a significant aquatic ecosystem characterized by a mix of brackish water and freshwater inflows from local rivers. The lagoon is lined with dense mangrove forests, essential for coastal stabilization and as a spawning ground for fish. Fresco is particularly known for the presence of the West African manatee, an endangered species that finds food and shelter in its calm waters. The local economy is heavily based on traditional fishing and salt extraction, with communities closely tied to the protection of natural resources. Geomorphologically, the lagoon is separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a narrow strip of sand, which is occasionally breached during strong storms. The region is also a paradise for ornithologists, serving as a resting place for numerous migratory birds. Despite its isolation, the lagoon is an important part of the Ivorian coast's ecological network and features insights into traditional lifestyles in harmony with nature.

Getting there

The remote Fresco Lagoon is located on the southwestern coast and is best accessed via an off-road capable vehicle from the town of Fresco using local dirt tracks.

Best season

The reliably dry season months are by far the most well-suited for uninterrupted birdwatching and mangrove exploration. Always avoid the extreme heavy rain months from May to July.

Terrain & paths

The untamed landscape consists of incredibly complex, dense mangrove forests, shifting sandy barriers, and muddy river estuaries. Exploration is undoubtedly best done by boat.

What to bring

Sturdy, highly water-resistant footwear, powerful insect repellent, and sun protection are mandatory. High-quality binoculars are an absolute must for all serious nature enthusiasts.

Safe parking is mainly available back in the town of Fresco, from where the vast majority of visitors depart into the lagoon in small wooden boats with an experienced local guide.

The underlying currents near the open ocean mouth can be surprisingly treacherous. A guided tour is strongly advisable so you do not accidentally get lost in the mangrove maze.
