Historic Viaduct of Dimbokro (Côte d’Ivoire)

Weather…

The historic viaduct of Dimbokro is an impressive testament to engineering from the early colonial period of Ivory Coast. The bridge spans the N'Zi River and was built around 1910 as part of the Abidjan-Niger railway to economically open up the interior of the country. With a length of about 250 meters, it was one of the most ambitious construction projects in West Africa at the time of its building. The steel structure rests on massive pillars and has survived decades of intensive use as well as the challenges of the tropical climate. Dimbokro itself developed into an important trading center for textiles and agricultural goods thanks to this strategic crossing. In 2016, a part of the bridge spectacularly collapsed under the weight of a freight train, highlighting the need for extensive renovation work. Today, the viaduct remains not only a functional element of infrastructure but also a landmark of the region's industrial history. It symbolically connects the colonial past with the modern economic development of the central region.
