Vieste is the easternmost town on the Gargano Peninsula in Puglia, a place of extraordinary natural beauty. Built on two rugged headlands, the town is characterized by its gleaming white houses that stand in sharp contrast to the deep blue of the Adriatic Sea. Its most famous landmark is Pizzomunno, a massive 25-meter-high white limestone monolith standing at the beginning of the south beach, steeped in local romantic legends. The old town, 'Vieste Vecchia', is a labyrinth of steep staircases, narrow alleys, and shaded arches that lead to viewpoints with spectacular sea views. Overlooking the town is a Swabian castle built by Frederick II, while the Romanesque cathedral bears witness to its medieval significance. Vieste is also the main gateway for visiting the impressive sea caves along the coast and the nearby Tremiti Islands.
