Kilkenny Castle (Ireland)

Weather…

Kilkenny Castle, overlooking the River Nore, was completed in 1195 by William Marshal to guard a strategic crossing point. For nearly 600 years, it served as the principal residence of the powerful Butler family, the Earls and Dukes of Ormonde, who arrived in Ireland following the Anglo-Norman invasion. The castle’s architecture is a complex blend of medieval defensive towers and 19th-century Victorian remodeling, resulting in its current quadrilateral shape. A highlights of the interior is the Long Gallery, featuring a magnificent hammerbeam roof and an extensive collection of family portraits. In 1967, Arthur Butler, 6th Marquess of Ormonde, gifted the deteriorating castle to the city of Kilkenny for a symbolic £50. Since then, it has undergone extensive restoration and is now managed by the Office of Public Works. The castle is surrounded by 50 acres of parkland and formal gardens, serving as a premier cultural venue and one of Ireland's most visited historic sites.
