Kells Priory (Ireland)

Weather…

Kells Priory, located in County Kilkenny, is one of Ireland's most impressive and well-fortified medieval monuments. The Augustinian priory was founded in 1193 by Geoffrey FitzRobert, a brother-in-law of Strongbow, and is best known today for its massive curtain walls, which earned it the nickname 'Seven Castles of Kells.' These fortifications were erected in the 15th century to protect the priory during the turbulent times of local clan feuds and English conflicts. Despite its defensive appearance, it was a center of prayer and agriculture until it was dissolved in 1540 during the suppression of the monasteries under Henry VIII. The ruins include the priory church, cloisters, and several towers spread across a sprawling area along the King’s River. Archaeological excavations in the 1970s unearthed numerous artifacts documenting the daily lives of the monks and the surrounding settlement. Kells Priory remains a premier example of the symbiosis between sacred architecture and military protection in medieval Ireland.
