Muine Bheag, historically known as Bagenalstown, is situated in County Carlow along the banks of the River Barrow. The town was founded in the 18th century by Walter Bagenal, who envisioned a planned settlement inspired by the grandeur of Versailles, although his full architectural ambitions were never entirely realized. A significant landmark is the neoclassical courthouse, which was completed in 1845 and features a portico reminiscent of an ancient Greek temple. During the 19th century, it flourished as a hub for limestone quarrying and grain milling, supported by the Barrow navigation system and the arrival of the Great Southern and Western Railway in 1846. Today, Muine Bheag serves as a vital transport link and a popular destination for coarse angling and waterway tourism. Its railway station remains one of the finest examples of Victorian railway architecture in Ireland, characterized by its ornate stonework. The town is also a key stop on the Barrow Way, attracting walkers and cyclists seeking scenic riverside trails.
