Slieve League (Ireland)

Weather…

Slieve League in County Donegal features some of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, dropping 601 meters nearly vertically into the Atlantic Ocean. These massive rock faces are almost three times higher than the Cliffs of Moher and offer a much wilder experience. Geologically, the cliffs consist of ancient Pre-Cambrian quartzite and schist. A narrow and exposed path known as 'One Man's Pass' leads along the ridge to the summit. The mountain contains remains of an early Christian hermitage, marking its spiritual significance. During World War II, large 'EIRE' signs were placed on the headland to assist aircraft navigation. The view from the Bunglass viewpoint stretches across Donegal Bay to the mountains of Sligo. The cliffs serve as an important nesting site for peregrine falcons. Slieve League is a celebrated natural wonder, attracting those who seek the raw beauty of Ireland's rugged coastline and its ancient spiritual heritage.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The area is widely accessible via local roads branching off from Carrick village, leading directly toward the cliff base facilities. An established visitor center and clear signage guide tourists toward the main viewpoints.
📅
Best season
The long days of summer offer the best opportunity to see the cliffs fully illuminated by the sun against the ocean. Winter visits can be impressively atmospheric but often feature cold, driving rain and obscured views.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
For casual visitors, the terrain consists of paved roads and constructed viewing platforms that are generally accessible. Those venturing onto the mountain slopes will encounter steep, rocky, and potentially slippery coastal trails.
🎒
What to bring
Even if just visiting the platforms, a robust windbreaker is essential to fend off the strong Atlantic sea breezes. Those hiking further up require proper boots with grip and multiple warm layers.
🅿️
Parking
A large lower car park requires a short hike or seasonal shuttle ride to the main cliffs to manage traffic. The upper car park right at the cliff edge has very restricted capacity and involves driving a steep, winding road.
⚠️
Safety
Keep securely behind all safety barriers at the viewing areas, as the drops to the sea are sheer and immense. Supervise children very closely, and avoid walking along the cliff top edges in high winds.
⏱️
Time needed
A standard sightseeing visit to view the cliffs from the platforms typically takes about one to two hours. Incorporating a significant hike up the mountain can extend the visit to a full half-day or more.
