The Rock of Dunamase is a dramatic limestone outcrop in County Laois, rising 46 meters above the surrounding plains, and holds a reputation as one of Ireland's most formidable historic defensive sites. Its strategic value was recognized as early as the 9th century, with annals recording a Viking raid on the Gaelic 'dun' or fort established there. Following the Anglo-Norman invasion in the late 12th century, the site was significantly refortified and became part of the dowry of Aoife, daughter of the King of Leinster, upon her marriage to the Norman lord Strongbow. The castle later passed to William Marshal, who developed it into a premier administrative and military center. The extensive ruins today include an outer bailey, a massive gatehouse, and the skeletal remains of the inner keep. Although slighted by Cromwellian forces in 1650 to prevent its further military use, the Rock remains a compelling monument to medieval engineering and gives commanding views across the Irish midlands.
