Donaghadee is a welcoming coastal town in County Down, Northern Ireland, situated on the northeast shore of the Ards Peninsula. For centuries, it served as the premier port for mail and passenger traffic between Ireland and Scotland, given that the distance to Portpatrick is only approximately 21 miles across the North Channel. The town's most prominent landmark is the lighthouse, completed in 1836 and constructed from distinctive grey limestone quarried in Anglesey. Another significant historical feature is 'The Moat', a Norman motte that was later topped with a fortified structure used as a gunpowder magazine. Donaghadee is also celebrated for its maritime heritage, particularly the legendary bravery of its lifeboat crews throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. The town maintains a serene seaside atmosphere, making it a favorite spot for recreational angling and sailing. Today, while acting as a popular residential area for Belfast commuters, Donaghadee retains its proud identity as a historic maritime gateway.
