Castlewellan is located at the foot of the Mourne Mountains in County Down, Northern Ireland, and is famous for its expansive Forest Park and rich botanical heritage. The town was established as a planned market town in the 18th century by the Annesley family, which is reflected in its broad streets and symmetrical market square. The Scottish Baronial-style Castlewellan Castle, built in the 19th century, overlooks a photogenic lake and currently houses a Christian conference center. One of the town's primary attractions is the Peace Maze, one of the world's largest permanent hedge mazes, planted in 2000 to represent the peace process in Northern Ireland. The National Arboretum within the Forest Park contains one of the finest tree collections in Europe, drawing botanists from around the globe. The town serves as a popular base for hiking and mountain biking in the surrounding rugged terrain. Castlewellan successfully blends historical elegance with a spirited local community and modern recreational facilities.
