Bunratty Castle (Ireland)

Weather…

Bunratty Castle, located in County Clare, stands as the most complete and authentic medieval fortress in Ireland. The present structure was built in 1425 by the MacNamara family, later becoming a stronghold of the powerful O'Briens, Earls of Thomond, in 1475. The castle is a quintessential Irish tower house, characterized by its massive four corner towers and grand central hall. After falling into ruin, it was extensively restored in the 1950s by Lord Gort, who furnished it with the world-renowned Gort Collection of medieval furniture and art. Adjacent to the castle is the Bunratty Folk Park, a living history museum that recreates 19th-century Irish village life with relocated cottages, shops, and a working farm. Since 1963, the castle has been famous for its evening medieval banquets, providing visitors with a sensory journey into the past. Its proximity to Shannon Airport makes it a primary landmark for travelers, serving as a gateway to the history and architectural grandeur of late medieval Ireland.
