Ballymore Abbey (Ireland)

Weather…

Ballymore Abbey in County Westmeath was a significant monastic foundation established in the early 13th century. Originally founded as a Cistercian nunnery around 1218 by Walter de Lacy, it grew to become a vital religious and economic hub in the Irish Midlands. Dedicated to Saint Mary, the abbey operated under the patronage of the powerful De Lacy family, who exerted control over much of Meath and Westmeath during the Anglo-Norman period. During the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII in 1539, the abbey was suppressed, and its extensive properties were seized by the Crown. In later centuries, the site's buildings were repurposed for military use and storage, particularly during the turbulent 17th-century wars, which contributed to the substantial loss of its medieval fabric. Today, only fragmentary remains of the church and peripheral structures exist, providing historical insights into early Anglo-Norman monastic architecture in Ireland and the religious life of the medieval Midlands.
