Asdee, a small village on the coast of the Shannon Estuary in County Kerry, is home to a fascinating history closely linked to local clans and a famous American connection. Its name is derived from the Irish 'Eas Dubh' (Black Waterfall), pointing to the geographical features of the surroundings. Historically, the region was a stronghold for the O'Connor clan, whose Littor Castle ruins stand near the village, testifying to their medieval rule. Asdee gained international recognition as the ancestral home of Jesse James, the notorious American outlaw, whose grandfather John M. James lived here before emigrating in the 19th century. The village is home to St. Mary’s Church, built in 1835, which remains a center of religious life for the community. Today, the area is also known for its geological formations, particularly the 'Asdee Silt,' which provides valuable information about prehistoric coastline development. Asdee combines a quiet coastal landscape with deep historical and genealogical roots.
