Welcome to Jakarta Monument (Indonesia)

Weather…

The Welcome to Jakarta Monument (Monumen Selamat Datang) is one of the most iconic landmarks of Indonesia's capital, situated in the center of the Hotel Indonesia roundabout in Central Jakarta. It was commissioned in 1962 by President Sukarno to greet athletes and visitors arriving for the 4th Asian Games. The bronze statue depicts a man and a woman waving and holding a flower bouquet, symbolizing the hospitality of the Indonesian people. The sculpture was created by artist Edhi Sunarso based on a design by Abel Sorensen. The monument stands within a large fountain pool, which has become a focal point for public gatherings and sporting activities during Jakarta's car-free Sundays. Surrounded by modern skyscrapers and luxury hotels, the monument remains a central orientation point and a powerful symbol of the optimism and international outlook of the young Indonesian nation during the 1960s.
