Getting there
The region is usually reached by road from nearby major towns in Tamil Nadu or Kerala. Because much of the area falls within a protected tiger reserve, entering the deeper forest often requires joining a guided tour or obtaining official permits.
Best season
The cooler, drier months from November to March are generally the best time to visit. The monsoon season brings heavy, persistent rainfall and a significant increase in the number of leeches on the forest trails.
Terrain & paths
Expect dramatically undulating mountain terrain with steep sections and dense tropical vegetation. The paths can be narrow, sometimes rugged, and often require a good level of physical stamina to navigate comfortably.
What to bring
Bring robust hiking boots with excellent grip, and wear long trousers to protect your legs against insects and leeches. A reliable rain jacket and plenty of drinking water are absolutely crucial in the humid environment.

Vehicles are typically left at designated forest department checkpoints, eco-tourism bases, or authorized lodges. At these official points, your entry permits are usually checked and securely processed before you proceed.
Safety
Wildlife encounters, including large mammals, are entirely possible in this reserve. It is strictly advised to follow local guides, stay on permitted paths, and avoid wandering off into the forest after dusk.
Time needed
Most guided nature walks or safari tours will take at least half a day to complete. However, multi-day stays in nearby eco-lodges are very common to fully appreciate the remarkable biodiversity of the hills.
