Matheran
Matheran is a unique ecological gem in the Western Ghats, where all motorized vehicles are banned. This creates an incredible atmosphere of peace and clean air, a rarity in India. Travelers often arrive via the pleasant Matheran Hill Railway, a narrow-gauge toy train that winds through scenic forests. The town has over 38 viewpoints, including Panorama Point, which features a 360-degree vista, and Louisa Point, overlooking the Prabal Fort. The red-soil paths are shaded by dense evergreen forests home to inquisitive monkeys. Charlotte Lake is the primary water source and a serene spot for a peaceful afternoon. Visitors can explore on foot, by horse, or in man-pulled rickshaws. The local food scene features simple, hearty Maharashtrian fare. The best time to visit is post-monsoon (September to November) or during winter, when the views are clearest and the air is crisp.
