Comprising 30 caves carved into a horseshoe-shaped cliff overlooking the Waghora River, the site was developed in two major phases: the Satavahana period (2nd century BCE) and the Vakataka period (5th to 6th century CE). These caves functioned as monasteries (Viharas) and chaitya-grihas (prayer halls) for Buddhist monks and pilgrims. Ajanta is internationally renowned for its dramatic murals and frescoes, which depict scenes from the life of Buddha and the Jataka tales with profound artistic skill. Following the decline of Buddhism in the region, the caves were abandoned and reclaimed by the forest until their accidental rediscovery in 1819 by John Smith, a British officer. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983, Ajanta remains one of the most significant monuments for understanding the evolution of religious art in South Asia.
