Alibaug
Alibaug is a favorite weekend retreat for Mumbaikars, easily reached by a scenic ferry ride. The town is fringed with coconut and betel nut groves, offering a laid-back coastal vibe. While the main beach features unique black sand, nearby spots like Kihim and Varsoli offer cleaner shores and quieter escapes. The star attraction is the Kolaba Fort, a sea fortress accessible during low tide via a walk or horse-drawn carriage. It once served as a strategic naval base for the Maratha Empire. Further down the coast, the Murud-Janjira Fort stands as an impregnable marine marvel on an island. Culinary explorers will delight in Alibaug's seafood, prepared in the traditional 'Konkani' style. A fish thali is a local essential. The best time to visit is between November and March, when the sea is calm and the weather is pleasant. Ferry services are typically suspended during the monsoon season.
