Snæfellsjökull is the crown jewel of the national park that shares its name, located at the western tip of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. This 1,446-meter-high stratovolcano is capped with a glacier and can be seen from Reykjavík on clear days across Faxaflói Bay. It achieved worldwide fame as the entry point to the underworld in Jules Verne's classic novel. Many Icelanders also consider the mountain to be a place of unique spiritual energy and mystical power. Adventurers can join guided glacier tours using snowcats or snowmobiles to reach near the summit, providing panoramic views over the peninsula and the Atlantic Ocean. The area surrounding the volcano is characterized by rugged lava fields, deep caves, and dramatic coastal formations like Londrangar. The best time for glacier excursions is from May to August. In nearby fishing villages like Arnarstapi, visitors can enjoy authentic local seafood. Access is via Route 574, which circles the base of the volcano. The National Park features well-marked hiking trails for all levels.
