Bláfjöll
Bláfjöll, the 'Blue Mountains', is a volcanic mountain range in southwestern Iceland, located about 25 kilometers east of the capital, Reykjavík. The area was formed by volcanic activity along the Reykjanes Ridge zone and is characterized by extensive lava fields, craters, and cinder cones. With a maximum height of about 700 meters, it is the country's most significant winter sports center, featuring numerous ski lifts and slopes. Geologically, the region is known for its numerous lava tubes, of which the Leiðarendi cave is one of the most famous, offering insights into solidified lava flows. The landscape is characterized in summer by deep black and mossy green, while in winter it lies under a thick blanket of snow. Bláfjöll is located in a nature reserve that is also of crucial importance for the drinking water supply of the capital region. Researchers use the area to study fissure eruptions and the flow dynamics of basaltic lava near the coast.
