Nagyvázsony is a historic gem located at the meeting point of the Balaton Uplands and the Bakony Mountains, deeply embedded in Hungarian medieval history. The village is inseparable from the legend of Pál Kinizsi, the 15th-century general of King Matthias Corvinus, who was granted the local fortress for his military achievements. The centerpiece of the village is Kinizsi Castle (originally known as Vázsonykő Castle), which features an exceptionally well-preserved 28-meter-high residential tower (donjon). The castle has been thoroughly renovated to house interactive exhibitions on medieval warfare and daily life, and it frequently hosts knightly tournaments and festivals. Beyond the castle, visitors can explore the evocative ruins of the Pauline Monastery, also founded by Kinizsi, where his red marble sarcophagus was originally placed. The village is also home to a unique Post Museum and an open-air ethnographical collection showcasing the folk architecture of the Bakony region. Nagyvázsony’s strategic location on ancient trade routes made it a prosperous settlement for centuries, visible in its sturdy stone buildings and historic churches. As a key stop on the National Blue Trail, the village is also a popular hub for hikers exploring the surrounding hills and the nearby Káli Basin.
