Abaliget is one of the most popular excursion spots in the Mecsek Mountains of Southern Hungary. Its main attraction is the 466-meter-long dripstone cave, where the constant 12°C temperature and high humidity provide therapeutic benefits for respiratory conditions. Visitors can take guided tours through the cave to see fascinating limestone formations. Next to the cave entrance sits the country's only Bat Museum, offering interactive exhibits about these mammals. The village is positioned in a scenic valley and features two man-made lakes. One is used for boating and water cycling, while the other is a haven for anglers. The surrounding area has numerous hiking trails through dense beech forests leading to the peaks of the Western Mecsek. Abaliget is also a well-known camping site for nature enthusiasts. Local dining features typical Baranya region dishes, with forest mushrooms and game meat often highlighted. Accessible from Pécs in about 20-25 minutes by car or bus. While the cave is enjoyable year-round due to its stable climate, the best time for outdoor activities is from spring to autumn.
