University Hall (HKU) (Hong Kong SAR China)

Weather…

University Hall is a historic residential hall of the University of Hong Kong, perched on a hillside in Pok Fu Lam. Originally known as Douglas Castle, it was built in 1861 by the Scottish merchant Douglas Lapraik as his private residence. The building is a rare example of Neo-Gothic architecture in Hong Kong, featuring crenellated battlements, turreted towers, and elegant spiral staircases. After Lapraik's era, it was owned by the French Missions Étrangères de Paris and functioned as a monastery and printing press for several decades before the university acquired it in the mid-1950s. Declared a Statutory Monument in 1995, it beautifully blends Western castle-like aesthetics with the lush tropical greenery of the island. Today, it houses a close-knit community of male students who maintain a wealth of unique traditions in one of the city's most evocative historical settings.
