Statue Square (Hong Kong SAR China)

Weather…

Statue Square is a historic public plaza located in the heart of Hong Kong's Central district, serving as a prominent link to the city's British colonial past. Laid out in the late 19th century, it was originally designed to showcase bronze statues of the British Royal Family, including Queen Victoria. Most of these monuments were seized and melted down during the Japanese occupation in World War II, leaving the statue of Sir Thomas Jackson, a prominent early manager of HSBC, as the sole survivor on the square today. The area is surrounded by some of Hong Kong's most architecturally significant buildings, such as the neoclassical Old Supreme Court and the modern HSBC headquarters. On Sundays, the square undergoes a lively cultural transformation as it becomes a major gathering spot for the city's domestic worker community. As an urban oasis amidst the soaring skyscrapers of the financial district, Statue Square remains a key site for public ceremonies, historical reflection, and social gatherings.
