Sai Wan War Cemetery

Sai Wan War Cemetery is a poignant and solemn memorial located on the slopes of Cape Collinson in Chai Wan, on the northeastern part of Hong Kong Island. Established in 1946, it serves as the final resting place for over 1,500 Commonwealth personnel who died during the Second World War, specifically during the defense of Hong Kong in December 1941. The cemetery features a striking memorial at its entrance, inscribed with the names of over 2,000 additional soldiers who have no known grave. The site is renowned for its meticulously maintained white headstones set against lush green lawns, with the Sai Wan Memorial pillars standing tall against the backdrop of the harbor and the urban skyline. Many of those buried here were members of Canadian and Indian units who fought valiantly alongside British and local forces.
