Plover Cove Country Park (Hong Kong SAR China)

Weather…

Plover Cove Country Park, located in the northeastern corner of the New Territories, is one of Hong Kong's most expansive and scenic wilderness areas. Covering over 4,500 hectares, the park encompasses rugged hills, dramatic coastlines, and several offshore islands, including the easy on the eye Double Island within the Double Haven region. One of its most significant cultural landmarks is the 400-year-old Hakka village of Lai Chi Wo, which provides a fascinating window into traditional rural life, historical architecture, and sustainable farming practices. The park is geologically renowned for its ancient reddish sedimentary rocks and tranquil sea channels. Hikers can explore a vast network of trails that lead through dense woodlands and past historic walled villages, offering panoramic views of the water and surrounding mountains. With its rich biodiversity and serene atmosphere, Plover Cove serves as a vital sanctuary for local wildlife and a premier destination for eco-tourism in Hong Kong, far removed from the city's urban sprawl.

Getting there
The extensive area is best accessed via the village of Tai Mei Tuk or Wu Kau Tang. Regular bus services from Tai Po Market or Fanling MTR stations bring you to these popular starting points.
📅
Best season
The park landscape is most beautifully explored from late autumn to early spring. In the hot, humid summer months, many of the unprotected trails can become unbearably hot and unpleasant.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The park area has a great variety of landscapes, from simple waterfront promenades to rocky hill paths. Hiking trails range from flat gravel roads to steep, root-filled forest sections.
🎒
What to bring
For extensive tours in this reserve, good hiking shoes, mosquito repellent, and plenty of drinking water are essential. Sun protection is equally important as the coastal sections are often shadeless.

Parking
There are public parking areas in Tai Mei Tuk, but they fill up extremely quickly on sunny weekends. It is less stressful to leave your car at the train stations and take the minibus.
⚠️
Safety
When hiking along the coast, pay attention to the tides to avoid being surprised by rising water. Take a headlamp in case a longer hike continues into the evening dusk.
