Named after Sir Hugh Gough, a 19th-century British military commander, the mountain has evolved from a strategic lookout into one of the world's most prestigious residential addresses. The slopes of Mount Gough, particularly along Severn Road and Pollock's Path, host some of the most expensive real estate globally, offering wide-open vistas of the Central District and the sparkling waters of Victoria Harbour. Geologically characterized by Jurassic granite, the peak features rugged terrain cloaked in dense subtropical vegetation. While Victoria Peak attracts the bulk of the tourist traffic, Mount Gough maintains a more secluded and private atmosphere. The area's history is deeply intertwined with the colonial era, when the British elite built summer retreats here to enjoy the cooler air provided by the elevation. The area is easily accessible from the Peak Tram upper terminus or surrounding peak roads. Many paths connect this residential peak to the broader Victoria Peak trail network.
