Best season
The Zoological and Botanical Gardens are open year-round, but the most pleasant months to visit are October to March. During this time, temperatures are mild and the animals are more active than in the hot summer months.
Best time of day
Animal feeding times are typically early morning and late afternoon - at those times the enclosures become especially lively. Early mornings are less crowded, allowing you to enjoy the gardens peacefully.
Etiquette
Feeding the animals is prohibited throughout the grounds, as it can harm their health. Please stay on paths and do not touch any animals or plants; in certain areas, flash photography is not allowed.
What to bring
Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as the gardens include several hills and stairs. A camera with a lightweight telephoto lens is good for close-up shots of animals, even those in the back enclosures.
Getting there
The gardens are located on the northern slope of Victoria Peak in central Hong Kong. They are easily reachable on foot from Central MTR station or by bus to the 'Zoo' stop. Entry is usually free of charge.
What to expect
As a public zoo, the animals are accustomed to people - yet you still need patience for good photos when the animals are sleeping. Visit the enclosures during feeding times for peak activity.
