Mount Davis (Hong Kong SAR China)

Weather…

Mount Davis (269 m) is a hill at the western tip of Hong Kong Island, forming the Mount Davis Country Park. It is named after Sir John Francis Davis, the second Governor of Hong Kong (1844-1848). Geologically, it is composed of quartz-rich granite. The summit features the remains of Mount Davis Fort, built in 1885 to defend the western approach to Victoria Harbour. During the Battle of Hong Kong in December 1941, the fort was one of the last British strongholds. Today, the bunkers and gun emplacements are preserved as declared monuments. The vegetation includes coastal woodland and grassland. From the top, there are panoramic views of the Soko Islands, Lantau Island, and Lamma Island. The Mount Davis Trail (1.5 km) leads to the fortifications. Notable birdlife includes the white-bellied sea eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster).
