Kowloon Walled City Park (Hong Kong SAR China)

Weather…

Kowloon Walled City Park stands as a tranquil Jiangnan-style garden, built upon the ruins of one of history's most fascinating urban anomalies. Originally a Qing Dynasty military outpost intended to monitor British activity, the site fell into a legal vacuum for decades, eventually becoming a lawless enclave known as the Walled City. At its peak in the 1980s, an estimated 33,000 residents lived packed into a single city block, creating a labyrinth of interconnected high-rises ruled by triads and lacking basic services. Following its demolition in 1993, the area was reborn as a lush public park featuring classical Chinese architecture, ponds, and floral walks. The centerpiece of the park is the fully restored Yamen, the only original building remaining from the military era, which now serves as a museum. Visitors can explore archaeological remains of the South Gate and its foundations, discovered during the transformation. A detailed bronze scale model near the entrance vividly depicts the 'City of Darkness' that once existed here, making the park a unique site where modern Hong Kong's greenery meets its complex colonial and cultural heritage.
