Pico Bonito National Park is one of the most diverse and impressive protected areas in Honduras, located in the north of the country near the city of La Ceiba. The namesake peak, Pico Bonito, rises majestically to an elevation of 2,435 meters (7,989 feet) from the Nombre de Dios mountain range. Geographically, the park spans several altitudinal zones, from tropical lowland rainforests to high-elevation cloud forests. This vertical distribution creates habitats for an extraordinary level of biodiversity, including jaguars, pumas, monkeys, and over 400 bird species, such as the rare yellow-naped amazon. Numerous rivers originate within the park, cascading down in spectacular waterfalls, with the Río Cangrejal on the park's border being particularly famous for whitewater activities. Historically, the park was established in 1987 to safeguard water resources and wilderness areas. Today, it is a significant center for ecotourism and scientific research, with trails like El Mapache offering visitors the opportunity to experience the dense vegetation and rich fauna of the Honduran Caribbean coast.
