Utila is known as one of the most affordable places in the world to get a scuba diving certification, attracting a young, international crowd. The island is smaller and less developed than Roatán, giving it a rustic and authentic charm. The biggest draw is the whale sharks, which can be spotted in the waters around the island throughout much of the year. Life on Utila mainly centers around the 'East Harbour' area, where dive shops, bars, and restaurants line the main street. Besides diving, visitors can explore freshwater caves, hike up Pumpkin Hill for views, or visit the secluded Cays off the coast. The atmosphere is extremely laid-back, with bicycles and golf carts being the primary modes of transport. The best time to visit is from March to May when the chances of whale shark sightings are highest. Utila is accessible by the 'Utila Dream' ferry from La Ceiba or Roatán, and there is also a small airstrip for charter flights from the mainland.
