💡 Tips

  • Arrive before 9 AM or after 5 PM during the summer to secure parking and find a good spot on the beach.
  • Water shoes are highly recommended as the spectacular beach is made of small white pebbles, not sand.
  • Make sure to stay well away from the base of the massive cliffs due to occasional, dangerous rockfalls.
  • The access road leading to the beach is very narrow and winding; drive carefully, especially in rental cars.

Egremni Beach Alternative

If Porto Katsiki is too crowded, take a boat tour to the equally remarkable but less accessible Egremni beach.

Porto Katsiki is located on the southwest coast of Lefkada and is consistently ranked among the best beaches in Europe. Its name translates to 'Goat Port,' reflecting a time when only goats could navigate the steep limestone cliffs to reach the shore. Nowadays, a paved road leads to the top of the cliffs, where a staircase of about 80 steps takes visitors down to the white pebbly beach. The contrast between the sheer white cliffs and the vivid blue water is panoramic. The sea here is home to a unique shade of turquoise, caused by the white limestone silt on the seabed. There is very little natural shade, so bringing an umbrella or renting one is essential for a day under the Mediterranean sun. During peak season, the beach gets crowded early, making sunrise visits or late afternoon trips preferable. As the sun sets, the cliffs glow in golden hues, providing a spectacular sight from the water or the viewpoint. Facilities at the top of the stairs include parking areas and small kiosks for food and drinks. A narrow path leads to a neighboring peninsula, offering the most famous panoramic view of the beach for photography. Many visitors also arrive via excursion boats departing from the ports of Nidri and Vassiliki. The water deepens quickly and can be wavy, so swimmers should be cautious. Porto Katsiki is the quintessential landmark of Lefkada and a must-see for any beach lover.
